Most website owners and SEO consultants have finally realized that in order to improve rankings on search engine results pages websites have to have textual content to be considered viable providers of information. When looking to create content for your site, there are some simple rules to improve your placement on results pages.

The IEP method

When developing content, I use what I call the IEP method. The content article must provide Information the customer will find useful. Not what I think the search engine is looking for. The information in the article will need to Educate the reader on some point pertaining to the search term and then an article can Promote products or services being sold by the website.

Search engines have become a lot smarter in the past few years and some of them seem almost human in their ability to separate the spam from the valuable information contained in articles. And with so many companies relying on article marketing, the information has to be relevant to search terms entered by users. As the saying goes, “content is king”, but if it’s not done right, it could be the court jester.

Using the right keywords

Article submission is a point of contention for many website owners. They provide relevant information to article submission sites and then wonder why their traffic isn’t overflowing. Chances are the keyword rich content they are providing isn’t necessarily relevant to the search. For example, their website sells winter ski equipment and their submissions are based on keywords such as skiing or snow skiing. Both are relevant, but they need to be aimed at the keywords being searched by users.

Aiming at niche markets with keywords such as ski bindings, or ski boots, will probably generate more traffic. The users may be looking for information on specific items related to skiing and the content can’t be solely about the main keyword.

Blogging

Posting articles on related blog sites is another way traffic can be enticed to your site. When you choose that route, you have to make sure the information you post is: 1) relevant to the topic and 2) provides a value to the reader. Posting information just for the sake of posting will not help your SEO rankings if the site’s visitors don’t find interesting or compelling value to your information.

How frequently should you add content to your own site?

Consistently updating the information on your site is another way to indicate to search engines that your site has important and valuable information and needs to be available to your audience. Instead of posting hundreds of articles once a month or so, post informative articles every week, or update your blog daily so the search engines, and more importantly your readers, can see a consistency in the available information on your site.

Get known

By establishing yourself as an expert in your field readers will keep coming back and if the information is of value they will share it with others, which in turn will bring more visitors to your site. Once you are known for providing valuable information relevant to the discussion, many will consider you an expert and include you as a valuable resource.

When creating content for your website, whether it’s on the site or on article submission sites, there are three characteristics it must show to help with your SEO strategy. The content has to be unique, have a value and be specific. Unique content is written from scratch and not simply re-written or rehashed information. Article spinners that use software to sort through and change certain words will only provide content that contains little if any value.

Wrap up

The value of your content is measured by the value placed on the information by your human readers, not search engines. If your articles simply ramble on with keywords thrown in for good measure, readers will not see any value in your contribution. Being specific in the provided information is equally important. Offering general information on certain keywords may trick the search engines into thinking you’re saying something important, but, if after reading the article the reader is still scratching their head and saying, “huh?” then the article isn’t going to gain any fans.

Great advice. Its amazing that one still sees an enormous amount of extremely poor SEO articles even now so long after the last major update (and two-bit article services that copy and spin).

Although I do like the whole post, writing for the user is the one single best piece of advice in my opinion.

Good information on writing for SEO. It takes time to write good content so I guess that is why there is so much poor quality articles.

    Dexter,
It is an important truth that you don’t write an article for a search engine. Google is more and more intelligent in regards to the spammy ways that “SEO” experts try to get sites to the top of Google. I outsourced some work to a man from Bangladesh and his methods got me right in the sandbox and my site has been there for 4 months now and I have lost thousands of dollars.

    Thanks

Wow, that’s a bit extreme. But then, when you’re the top dog (Google) I guess you can set the rules and no one can really do much about it. Other than learn from their experience. I’ve been fortunate to not have been on the receiving end of the big G’s wrath but then I tend to keep a low profile and not push the SEO envelope too much. Not here anyway. Cheers and thanks for your contribution. Michael.

Online marketing and SEO is a never ending process. Generating great copy is important on any website or blog. Your aim is to do have the best website for the keywords you’re targeting.

For inspiration review your competitors and see how you can make your website better than the results on the first page of Google.

    • Michael says:

For sure. It’s not cheating to check out the opposition. If we all did what you suggest the web would be a continuously improving collection of great articles, etc.

  6. Christi from Phoenix SEO Firm says:

The important thing to remember is you need to write for humans not just the bots. If you do it correctly the bots will take notice. Also, it’s important to keep abreast of what Google is doing. They have been busy this year with their Panda updates.

    • Michael says:

Thanks Christi, humans are the source of all revenue, not bots, so you are so right. Google takes more notice of human browsing behaviour and gives more credit to that than anything you can do to “impress” a bot.

Some SEO copywriting services providers tend to ask for some money upfront. This is just meant to assure the copywriter that you are serious and will pay the rest upon delivery of the work. If by any reason you decide to cancel the order already place, SEO copywriting have a right to hold on the deposit.
