The problem with most sites being sold in flippa is that they provide traffic stats just for the last few months. And most of these sites come with an implict warning – caveat emptor!
For instance I have seen many sites that are seasonal being sold just after the peak season (snow blowers after winter, pool cleaners after summer for instance). There was hardly any mention that the results from past few months is NOT typical.
While buying a site and developing it further is a very good option, it takes a lot of experience with developing own sites to gauge the potential and profitability of the site being sold.

I have always been in 2 minds about website flipping, I can understand the purchasing a domain, create a basic site with about 5 articles and sell it for $100 or so, tha type of site can be put together in a hour or 2, so $100 is not too bad.
I don’t understand though, why would you buy an established site, build up the traffic so that you are seeing finacial returns from it and then get rid of it. Wouldn’t it better in the long run to keep the site and continue making money from it? By all means flip the sites that aren’t performing so well, but I’d be tempted to keep a few site for myself.
I have been flipping site for about three years now and it is really a great way to make a living. The key is to keep really good records when you have a property that you think is valuable. That includes the financials (profit and loss), analytic’s as well as market trends. There are a lot of investors out there who are not tech savvy but use a broker to help them find a solid web based business. If you can show a paper trail of about a year (more is better) with an inclining income pattern and favorable market trend you might be surprised to see how much those site files and domain are worth. It is a VERY sexy game! However, as with some of the other comments I have to agree….the ability to spot value is critical.

For sure though, building websites and selling them is one way to make a living but if you check on flippa dot com you’ll see a lot of boiler-plate websites that have been hacked together to look “mature”, “happening” and “current” but they’re nothing more than junk filled with recycled/spun content.
I’ve seen many sites on flippa lately that have no Google PR or Alexa rank. That is, they are so new the ink is still wet on the home page graphics. In all cases, there was no declaration of income – because there is none! – and only wild claims of the “potential” to make income. My take on this: If website flipping turns your wheels then by all means, pursue it with all your passion but if you’re a buyer looking for an existing website, be very careful as there are many junk sites out there built just to tempt the inexperienced, first-time investor.
