lollies Guess who is guest postingI am trialling a plugin that turns all comments into a separate page that includes all other comments by the same author. I found out about it from my online friend Barry Wells.

Comment contributors who have taken the time to add comments to several posts on my blog will get what appears to the search engines as a separate page of content with a DoFollow link back to their site. The separate page is generated dynamically and is packed with all their contributions from everywhere across the blog. The DoFollow link back to Barry’s site is right at the top of the the page. In fact, they will get one unique page for every comment left on this blog.

Take a look at one of Barry Wells comment summary pages. This link opens in a new tab so that you can check it out, leave it open, then come back here to continue reading about it. Remember, this is just one of his unique pages now hosted on my blog.

If a comment author has posted several times on my blog their “personal” comments page will include every one of those comments and will be like a Guest Post. The exception is that you cannot add comments to the end of personal comments summary page. It does have a few other not-so-obvious benefits though.

It is a guest post with a difference in that it just keeps building as Barry adds more comments to the blog. The comment thread at the bottom of Barry’s page (that you still have open in another tab/window) comes from the particular post you were on when you clicked on Barry’s name or keywords. In Barry’s case it is keywords as he takes advantage of the Keyword Luv plugin.

Not only that, every one of Barry’s comments across the blog links to a new version of his page with a unique URL and a different set of comments depending on the underlying post.

I get dozens of extra content pages that can be found by search engines and each new page has links back to other posts on the site. Search engines like to see a healthy level of linking within a site and it helps the spiders find new comments very fast.

My site map now contains links to several hundred content pages on this blog. Now, some will say that I will get penalised for that as search engines also are claimed to prefer organic growth of pages over time rather than a whole heap coming on line overnight. I guess time will tell.

So in a sense, everyone who comments on my blog and leaves a URL link back to their site is getting an opportunity to build something similar to a guest page on my blog. I never thought I would get into accepting guest posts so soon, even if it is being performed dynamically by this plugin icon smile Guess who is guest posting

One drawback is that the link love from the Keyword Luv plugin is not directly from the comment stream but from the dynamic page. This might discourage some casual readers from clicking through to the blog of comment contributors. On the upside, CommentLuv links still point to your chosen post at the end of your comment. I am looking to see if I can edit the plugin so that the Gravatar image points to the custom dynamic page (your “guest post”) and make the KeywordLuv/Your name point back to your chosen URL, like it used to.

Do you like the idea or does it suck big-time? Is it out of this world and would it encourage you to write keyword rich comments knowing that they will all be on a page with a keyword based link to your chosen URL? I think it delivers value to visitors and me. Let me know what you think below.

PS. The plugin is ‘SEO Super Comments‘.

Wow! I definitely think this is a unique idea. I have the recent comments plugin with fairly large avatars as a column as a way to “celebrate” my blog visitors, along with the comment luv plugin. I’ve been wondering what else I could do! This could be the answer – especially to help out and recognize people who return and comment and help build the content on your blog!

Thanks for letting us know about this!! I cant wait to hear your results after your trial.

    Hi Michael

Thank you for an interesting post, I hadn’t heard of this plug-in before. As Vance said earlier, ‘the devil is in the detail’ so I will have to spend some time investigating it further before I make any decision.

    Warm regards
    Lynn

Sure Lynn, I would suggest you do that with all plugins that mess with your comments, content, links and sitemap.

This is quite technical for a biginer like me and I will have to re read it but it looks like an excellent tool. Barry’s 25% uplift is very interesting. I have subscribed and look forward to your updates.

    Hi, Michael

This sounds great – and once you have it the plugin going people will WANT ot return to your blog to see their “own page” building.

Not to mention all the links you’re getting

    Thanks for the info

    Jennifer

    • Michael says:

I hope so. We are all so busy building our own “empires” that sometimes the little things are overlooked but I do hope that it benefits comment authors with a little more link love.

  9. Dave Smith from Internet Marketing Secrets says:

    Hello Michael,
That sounds like a pretty neat plugin, will come back and have a better look, the fact it ends up developing new pages of comments is useful as pages are something Google likes even better than blog comments. Thanks for the info and sounds like a good new resource to try.
    Good luck

    Cheers

    Hi Michael

That seems a really nice plug in with a lot of advantages. And the idea to get the comments from the “top contributors” on a separate page seems wonderful. No only because it gives you more content pages but also because you give more exposure to the people that contributes actively to your blog.

Definitely, I’ll give a try to this plug in.

    Cheers

Jorge, I am glad to hear you like the idea. Each contributor gets their own page with a link to their blog up near the top. Twitter addresses still work on the original post (this page) as do CommentLuv links on this page. What I mean is, if you use Twitter and CommentLuv you get two links from every comment on this page as well as the dedicated page & link on your own comments page.

Thanks for this post. I’m actually using this plugin. I came across it a few weeks ago and installed it. But the truth is that I really did not know the details about it. Infact this morning when I moused over some of the comments on my blog I discovered they were not pointing to the commenters’ blogs. I thought something was wrong with my theme. On clicking on some of them I now realized that it was the plugin (SEO Comment plugin) that was responsible. I was thinking of removing as I thought it was not too good for the commenter’s benefits. But then when I read the ‘read me’ text again I realized what was happening.

I must appreciate your post because it further explained a lot of things. It will be a great idea indeed if you can further work on it as you mentioned.

    Thanks.

Hi Sally. I am going to be adding a small tweak to the plugin so that the keywords used by Keyword Luv still point to your blog rather than the dynamic page as it does currently. Not too long now and it will be a great plugin. I don’t like the fact that it takes over the Keyword Luv link and drops your nofollow link onto the dynamic page. Put your plans on hold for just a little while and when this new tweak is out it will be a much better plugin. Cheers, Michael.

Hi Randy. It is the most popular post for comments. I have hit a snag with modifying the plugin to do what I want it to do without touching any file in the theme/core. There is little point in releasing an update to the plugin if it requires people to lift the bonnet on the theme PHP or the WP core – a big no-no when it comes to stand-alone plugins.

I can see a way around this technical hitch but it has put my plans back a couple of weeks. No matter. Good things come to bloggers who wait.

      Michael.

  27. Matthew says:

    Hi Michael,

I believe this type of plugin will offer a great initiative to people to comment on a post multiple times.

I noticed the page that has Barry Well’s comments has also other people’s comments at the bottom, as if these people commented on Bery Well’s comment summary page. Where did these comments come from? Where these comments actually left on other pages of your site and they just show there as well?

    • Michael says:

The comments that appear below each individual’s comment page are the string of comments from the original post. I have yet to see any negative affect from this from the search engines. Search engine algorithms would contain logic that recognises the various ways of displaying the same information posted on blogs – tags, categories, archives. The same material can be displayed in several placed, just in a different order. I am taking the approach that the duplicate content will not be seen as something negative rather just one of the many ways in which blog content is repackaged for a different audience.
